What to check
How application support is organized
The practical starting point is the applicant's federal tax reason, existing documents and available filing route. A document checklist and written explanation can clarify the next step before sensitive records are exchanged.
Start with the federal tax purpose
A Form W-7 application should be based on a genuine U.S. federal tax need or an IRS-recognized exception. The application reason determines which return, evidence and submission procedure may be required.
What an IRS-authorized CAA does
A Certifying Acceptance Agent can assist with Form W-7 and authenticate many eligible supporting documents under IRS rules. The CAA prepares the required certificate where applicable, while the IRS makes the decision on the ITIN.
Applying from outside the United States
Applicants abroad can use eligible international mailing or IRS-authorized acceptance-agent options. Check how identity documents will be authenticated and whether the filing includes a tax return or an exception.
Send a brief first email, not identity scans
Describe the federal tax reason, country of residence and whether a U.S. return is expected. Do not send a passport scan, full tax return, complete taxpayer number or bank records in the first message.
IRS fees and private service fees
The IRS does not charge a fee to process Form W-7. Private preparers and acceptance agents may charge for their services; confirm the exact scope and price before engaging anyone.
The IRS controls approval and timing
Only the IRS can issue or reject an ITIN. An agent can help prepare a complete application but cannot guarantee approval, a specific processing time or preferential IRS treatment.
