What to do when your CP565 letter is missing
What the CP565 notice means
The IRS sends CP565 when it assigns or renews an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The notice records the ITIN and the name associated with it. It is a tax document, not proof of work authorization or immigration status.
Check your records before requesting a duplicate
Look for the original notice, secure tax records and prior correspondence. If you know your ITIN, keep it private; do not email the full number or passport scans in an initial inquiry. A lost letter is different from an expired ITIN.
Contact the IRS about a missing assignment notice
The IRS advises taxpayers who cannot find CP565 to contact the agency. You may need to verify identity, the assigned number and the current mailing address. The IRS ITIN contact page lists domestic and international telephone options.
Can the IRS send another CP565?
IRS Publication 4520 describes duplicate CP565 notices for circumstances including non-receipt and requested name or address changes. This is not an automatic online download or a guaranteed outcome; the IRS determines how a particular inquiry is handled.
If the address on record is outdated
Check the mailing address before asking about replacement correspondence. An individual address update may require Form 8822 or another accepted IRS method. A separate address-change guide explains those steps.
Help with a CP565 notice inquiry
We can help clarify the request, organize the available tax records and address details, and coordinate the appropriate inquiry or written request. We confirm the specific service scope and fee before starting; the IRS controls issuance and timing.
Frequently asked questions
Does losing CP565 mean my ITIN is no longer valid?
No. Losing the notice does not itself expire or cancel the assigned ITIN.
Is CP565 the same as EIN Letter 147C?
No. CP565 concerns an individual ITIN; Letter 147C is used for verification of a business EIN.
Can a private service provider guarantee a new CP565?
No. The IRS decides what verification and correspondence it will issue. A provider can assist with preparation and follow-up.
