How to update an ITIN mailing address
Does changing your address change your ITIN?
No. An ITIN is an individual federal tax-processing number. Moving to another home, city or country does not automatically change the assigned number. The practical issue is ensuring the IRS has a usable mailing address for future notices and tax correspondence.
Use Form 8822 or an eligible signed statement
The IRS lists Form 8822 for an individual change of home mailing address. It also describes a signed written statement containing your full name, old and new addresses and taxpayer identification number. The correct destination depends on where you filed your last return; use current IRS instructions.
What if Form W-7 is still being processed?
If you move before the IRS sends your ITIN assignment notice, contact the IRS about the pending ITIN application. Do not assume a routine address update will automatically redirect every notice already in processing. Keep your mailing evidence and case dates available.
How long does an address update take?
The IRS says a change-of-address request can generally take four to six weeks after receipt to process. Postal forwarding is not a reliable substitute for updating the IRS record, especially when an important tax notice is expected.
Address change and a missing CP565 notice
Changing your mailing address does not by itself request a duplicate ITIN assignment notice. If the CP565 letter was lost or never received, address accuracy and the notice inquiry should be handled as related but separate steps. See the CP565 guide for details.
How we assist with an ITIN address update
We can review your situation, help organize the individual address-change request and supporting details, and coordinate the next step when an ITIN notice is also missing. The service scope and fee are confirmed for the specific case before work begins.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to apply for another ITIN after moving?
No. An address change does not normally require a new ITIN. Update the IRS mailing record instead.
Can I change my IRS address without filing a new tax return?
The IRS lists Form 8822 and a signed written statement as possible address-change methods. Follow the current instructions for your circumstances.
Will Form 8822 automatically replace my CP565 letter?
No. A missing assignment notice requires its own IRS inquiry; the address update is a separate action.
